Our Goals:
- Operate our clinic
- Inform people that spay and neuter programs are more cost effective and humane than euthanasia
- Pass a state law that establishes a fund that provides spay and neuter services for low income families
Imagine a world where nearly every homeless animal gets adopted, where people do not have to care for a large number of animals that just show up on their doorstep. A community that has a wait list for kittens! There are places like this in the United States, why not make Northwest Arkansas one of them?
In 2007 Spay Arkansas was formed as a nonprofit to work towards proactive solutions to our pet population problem. It is our mission to make Arkansas a place where the number of companion animals available is equal to the number of people who want them. This can only be achieved by reducing the number of animals by an aggressive spay and neuter program, such as the one offered in New Hampshire. In that state, where residents pay an additional fee for their dog and cat license, they have decreased shelter euthanasia by 70% in 10 years.
Over 10,000 animals entered the shelters of NWA last year, and of these, more than 5,000 were killed. Most of these animals were young, healthy and adoptable. Unfortunately there were not enough adoptive parents and they were destroyed. At a cost of more than $100 each to house, feed, euthanize and incinerate them, we spent $500,000, that’s half a million dollars, on something that no one wants to do. There is a better solution, spay and neuter.
Our program is dedicated to providing our low income citizens an opportunity to have their pets altered at a reasonable price. We know that 70% of the animals that enter shelters come from the lowest income households, so why not save the taxpayers some money, save the animals needless suffering and limit the negative psychological impact upon our shelter workers? This is common sense, so let’s get to work to solve this problem now.
Every $1 spent to spay or neuter save $3 in animal control. This is a win win situation. Join us and make a difference!
